The 6 Components of the CELPIP Listening Exam

The CELPIP listening test is divided into six parts. You need to get to know each section so you can prepare for them adequately. This article discusses their essentials. Consider them during your CELPIP classes to enhance your training experience.

  1. Listening to Problem Solving

What you need to know about this section:

  • It focuses on a conversation that’s divided into three parts.
  • You can only listen to each part once. The snippet is 1 to 1.5 minutes long.
  • Each conversation snippet is followed by 2 to 3 questions. The questions are in audio form and can only be listened to once.
  • You have around five minutes to accomplish this section.

What to Keep in Mind:

The recordings are all part of a single conversation. The first section establishes the issue, its context, and the opinions of the speakers on it. The second section dissects the speakers’ viewpoints. The last section concludes the discussion with a feasible solution. Knowing this sequence will help you predict the flow of ideas and follow the conversation better. So, remember these during your CELPIP test preparation.

  1. Listening to a Daily Conversation

What you need to know about this section:

  • It focuses on a conversation that’s followed by five questions.
  • You can only listen to the conversation and questions once. The conversation is 1.5-2 minutes long.
  • You have around two minutes to accomplish this section.

What to Keep in Mind:

The conversation usually revolves around a problem. Determine what it is and pay attention to how the speakers resolve it. Take note of how they talk about it (e.g., tone, emotion, etc.) as well.

  1. Listening for Information

  • You can only listen to the conversation and questions once. The conversation is 2 to 2.5 minutes long.
  • You have around 2.5 minutes to accomplish this section.

What to Keep in Mind:

The conversation is always between a man and a woman. Determine which speaker is providing the information so you can focus more on what he/she is saying. Practice this strategy during your CELPIP classes.

  1. Listening to a News Item

What you need to know about this section:

  • It focuses on a news recording that’s followed by five questions.
  • You can only listen to the news item once. The recording is about 1.5 minutes long.
  • You have around 1.5 minutes to accomplish this section.

What to Keep in Mind:

News items usually follow the inverted pyramid structure. The most pertinent information are mentioned first, followed by supporting and background details. Study up about this news structure during your CELPIP test preparation. Pay close attention to the first part of the recording. Take note of names, figures, and other key information.

  1. Listening to a Discussion

What you need to know about this section:

  • It focuses on a video that’s followed by eight questions.
  • You can only watch the two-minute video once.

What to Keep in Mind:

Don’t just listen, watch. There are many people involved in the discussion. Taking note of their appearance will help you remember what they said better. Focus on which people support or disagree with the topic.

  1. Listening to Viewpoints

What you need to know about this section:

  • It focuses on a report that’s followed by six questions.
  • You can only watch the three-minute report once.
