  1. What is the Reading Task 1 like?

Reading correspondence is the first Reading Task and involves two components:

  • The first component requires you to read an email or a letter and to answer six questions.
  • The second component includes reading a short reply from the recipient of the letter/email. The content of the reply has five blanks, and your task is to fill in all the blanks by choosing the correct word/s from the given choices.
  1. What is the Reading Task 2 like?

The second Reading Task involves reading an email with several blanks and analyzing a given diagram. Your task is to fill in the blanks in the email by choosing the correct word/s in the drop-down menu.

  1. What is the Reading Task 3 like?

Reading for information is the third task of the Reading Test. In this Reading Task, you will see four paragraphs that are labeled with their corresponding letter (A, B, C, and D) and a statement “not given in any of the above paragraphs” marked with the letter E. You will also see nine sentences that are either related or not related to the given paragraph choices. Your task is to determine which paragraph (A, B, C, D or E) does each sentence belong to.

Reading for viewpoints is the fourth and final Reading Task and measures your skills on how you can understand the viewpoint of a given article. In this Reading Task, you will read and an article from a website. Your task is to answer ten questions regarding the content of the article.

  1. How long is the CELPIP—General Reading Test?

For test takers attending CELPIP course review classes, the CELPIP—General Reading Test takes about 55–60 minutes to complete.

  1. Can I take notes during the Reading Test?

Yes, you can. While taking the CELPIP—General Test, you will be provided with a notepad and a pen. You may use these items to take notes in all components of the CELPIP—General exam, including the Reading Test.

  1. How are the CELPIP—General Reading responses scored?

The computer automatically scores the Reading Test using the CELPIP level and its corresponding description. The CELPIP level was established by English language experts who participated in a standard setting exercise.

  1. How reliable is the CELPIP—General Reading score?

The CELPIP—General test uses the Cronbach’s alpha, which specifically measures the internal consistency of a test form. A Cronbach’s alpha result of 0.80 or higher is considered to be excellent. The CELPIP—General Reading Test has a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.88.

  1. Does everyone take the same Reading Test?
